Lady Gaga Slams Claims She's Using the Gay Community to Boost Record Sales
Lady Gaga and the gay community seem to go together like PB&J, but the pop star has recently been criticized for exploiting her LGBT fans to sell records -- a "ridiculous" claim Gaga isn't taking lightly.
"My love for my gay fans is just pure, authentic love for them as supporters of me from the beginning, and me feeling connected to their struggles as someone who is a part of their fight," Gaga tells
The Advocate.
Gaga, who admits in the interview that she considers herself a member of the LGBT community -- specifically, "the 'B' letter" -- says anyone claiming that she's using the gay community to help bolster record sales is absurd.
"To say that I would use the gay community to sell records is probably one of the most ridiculous statements anyone can make about me as a person," Gaga says. "I would say the top thing I think about every single day of my life, other than my fans, loving the music, and my family being healthy, is social justice and equality."
She goes on to recall a recent interaction she had with a young gay man in the military who told her that America's fight for equality has given him hope -- and he gave her his service jacket as a symbol of his thanks.
"We just held each other and cried," Gaga says. "Anyone who says that I'm not genuine is not interested in overcoming this fight. That was such a pure and wonderful moment that we shared, and I remember thinking, 'There's no album sale, no Number 1, that could compete with this moment.' That is what the f**k it's all about. What the f**k it's all about is if I can write one song that could change one person's life."
Gaga, who is currently
in Tawian promoting her 'Born This Way' album, also touches upon the true meaning behind the title track in the interview.
"['Born This Way'] not about just being born in one moment; it's about being reborn over and over again until you find and become that unique and special person inside of you that is the most brave and the most sure and the most ready to take on the world," she says. "And I was born this way. And that's who I am."
"Some people weren't born to wear masks, but I was. I was born to wear masks and wigs and fashion. To express myself through my clothing and my performance art, and that's who I am. And the song is meant to be liberating not only from an individual perspective but from a creative perspective."
All of the drama surrounding Gaga's relationship with the gay community comes of the heels of yet another controversy -- this one dealing with her contribution to the Japan earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.
Michigan based law firm, 1-800-LAW-FIRM, has
filed suit against the singer, claiming she pocketed a portion of the funds from her 'We Pray for Japan' wristbands for herself.

Agreed! I have no respect for her on any level, but especially this one. Greedy, selfish, and uncaring.
I love you, Lady Gaga!!! I will always be a fan!!!

It's never enough for folks is it! A celebrity does nothing to help people, she's blasted. A celebrity does something nice like support a group that everyone is brainwashed to hate, no one believes that she can do something nice for a change. Damned if she's selfish, damned if she gives a damn. Criticize her for flip flopping? Excuse me, is she making anyone read about her, turn off the sound when they hear about her? No. Everyone follows her, then criticizes. Everyone criticizes her looks, but is anyone here doing anything with theirs? Is anyone here in the spotlight? Would anyone here support a gay person/group in public instead of ranting about support only in private because they're too afraid of what people might think? She's not a hypocrite. She's damned if she pockets funds, she's damned if she doesn't. She's damned if she shows humanity she's damned if she doesn't. Criticizer her for her meat outfit and how many cows it took to slaughter? Uh.. did she plaster anyone's eyes to SEE that outfit? No, and don't tell me everyone here is a vegetarian. This woman genuinely loves her fans. They're people, not just pocket change, and she contributes a hell of a lot more than anyone else here does. If you all can do better, act better, dress better, support important causes better, I'd love to see and hear about it.

Lady Gaga is stepping into a political area which I think all entertainers should stay out of. I think she is a cheap copy of Madonna.
