It's the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet for Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied's baby son, Aleph. According to an Israeli TV Show, 'Good Evening with Guy Pines' (via HollywoodLife) Portman, who was born in Israel, paid homage to her motherland by naming her son after the letter 'A' in the Hebrew alphabet.Aleph was born in mid-June but the newborn's first-time parents kept his name under wraps until letting it slip on the Israeli talk show. Baby Alef already calls one of the most talented women in Hollywood 'mom' and now he also has to live up to his lofty name -- Alef represents the "oneness of God" and the element of air.

@Stu: Given where I suspect your hemmrhoids are located, I bet you have a migraine now.
oh please she's being pretentious by naming her son that and just because she stole an academy award doesn't make her the most talented woman in hollywood now a days pretty much anybody can get an oscar. if she wanted to honor her hebrew roots she could've named him Arthur or Avrom and most famous people don't use their real names anyway

Wow, who peed in your cheerios? You need to smarten up before you post more drivel, dear.
yes, she could have named her kid those names you suggest but the name she chose is not too weird of a name and it's better than what you suggest. When are people going to learn that if they want to name a baby then they should have their own kid? geez, I can't believe I've been driven to stick up for a celeb.
LMAO..."Who peed in your Cheerios". That's it, I can't read anymore of these.
Why is this any of your concern? And let me ask you this: "Courtney" isn't pretentious?
Cranky today are we Courtney? So they wanted a different name from the everyday. It's not like they named him Dweezel or Moon Unit...oh wait...Frank Zappa used those names fpr his kids. LOL Are you getting the point??
Alef? I never heard that one, and I pored through a dozen baby name books before I had my own. Is it AL-EF or AY-LEF? (Isn't it true that Jewish names are given to the child that begin with the letter of the name of the deceased person they are named after? For example, if you have a deceased uncle Saul, you would name your child Sam). Anyway. I hope Alef doesn't morph into ALF, though that isn't all that bad.

It is Ah-Lef. And no- there is a tradition of naming after relatives (deceased by the Ashkenazim, living by the Sephardim), but it is the actual name, not just a name with the same letter. And personally- Alef is a ridiculous name. Imagine a kid with the name A.
Sari, there actually was an actor a while back named "A Martinez." Just throwing that out there.
Pretty bad. It's possibly even worse than "Apple" or "Moon Unit."
It's none of my business but babies have these names forever. I guess others respect their heritage and families.

I hope baby Alef will have someone named "DADDY" in his life.

You're a bitter piece of work. Jewish men don't abandon their families. She is brillant. She graduated in the top 3 at MIT, has a PH.D in Physics, is beautiful and a great actor...what have
you done? LMAO
