It's the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet for Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied's baby son, Aleph. According to an Israeli TV Show, 'Good Evening with Guy Pines' (via HollywoodLife) Portman, who was born in Israel, paid homage to her motherland by naming her son after the letter 'A' in the Hebrew alphabet.Aleph was born in mid-June but the newborn's first-time parents kept his name under wraps until letting it slip on the Israeli talk show. Baby Alef already calls one of the most talented women in Hollywood 'mom' and now he also has to live up to his lofty name -- Alef represents the "oneness of God" and the element of air.

Three weeks old and he's already saying "Mom?" Yeah, he's still seeing everything in threes.

If you read the sentence again it isn't stating the child is actually saying the word "Mom" but is another way of saying that she is his Mom....like I could say "I'm lucky I can call her Mom because she is a wonderful person." That means I am proud to say she is my Mom, not that I can literally say "Mom".
Well, there was an actress who named her child Apple....
Actually, I think it is nice to consider the meaning behind the name.
We used the name Mitzvah (Mitzi for short) for a name...Mitzvah means blessing.

He looks somewhat colored in that photo.

Alice, I've seen you use the word "colored" before. Stop it, it makes you sound like trash.
Congratulations Natalie. Wish Alef every success in his life.

It's a stupid name. It's like naming your kid L. And if he ever lives in Israel, everyone there will really think it's stupid.

First of all, it is not a rule to be named after the deceased, however next generations do try to honor it. At least with the hebrew name. Yes it is a bit different, however given the meaning
of the letter, which also starts the word Adonoi (God) in our prayers, it must be significant to her.
Let's just hope she follows up and raises the baby in her faith with which she gave the name, so he rightly knows his heritage.

...and this is important because? By they way, my cousin has named her child as well. The name will be released at the appropriate time.

Wow, SOOO GLAD she finally shared the name (sarcasm). I can get on with my life now. Not a fan of the name, but it's her child. As long as they are happy........

She didn't steal the Oscar...She won it for acting, not ballet dancing...

She should have given that name more thought.

What a terrible stigma to attach to an innocent child...There is no such thing as an illigitimate child...You must be a christian...

You would prefer the term "bastard"?
