It's the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet for Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied's baby son, Aleph. According to an Israeli TV Show, 'Good Evening with Guy Pines' (via HollywoodLife) Portman, who was born in Israel, paid homage to her motherland by naming her son after the letter 'A' in the Hebrew alphabet.Aleph was born in mid-June but the newborn's first-time parents kept his name under wraps until letting it slip on the Israeli talk show. Baby Alef already calls one of the most talented women in Hollywood 'mom' and now he also has to live up to his lofty name -- Alef represents the "oneness of God" and the element of air.

I rather love Jewish or Hebrew names they are biblical and strong and have such beautiful meanings translated into any language...

Did she think of what the child would go thru in life - kids being what they are - they will call him Allie - will she like that - besides being that he is illegitimate. what a shame for a woman who thinks and believes she is smart. Selfish - is what she is - doesn't care what child goes thru - mom on tv declaring she was not married when she had him. Sorry Natalie - guess you didn't know if you would marry father.

Aleph is the Hebrew for Alpha (Greek) for "beginning" I think, as in Alpha and Omega, beginning and end, therefore this is the first of her children and personally I think it is a wonderful name.

I believe that the babys name is your choice.. but let's get honest here.. the real issue is that the baby is illegitmate.. born of parents who are not married to one another which is not legal or logical.. poor choice...

Has nothing to do with Natalie's baby' name. Just when you post many pictures of expectant couples, PLEASE identify them! I usually recognize most, but many are too new and unknown to me,not like in the 'old' days when everyone was a well known celebrity!

SOME GREAT EXAMPLE SHE IS TO HER FAITH AND WOMANHOOD. ALEPH WILL PROBABLY GROW UP TO BE BAIS.

The name Alef does not guarantee that he will live the full potential of the qualities attached to the letter, however the qualities possibly could be presented. Growing up, there were all these guys from across the river whose first name's were often Jesus (pronounced Hayzus), but that did not seem to make any difference in their breaking just about every law there is.

The element of air from a couple of airheads. Now this kid has to live with this name for the rest of his life and go to school with it.

Her name choice is fine. People are right though, at least she didn't name him Moon Unit, and she's just doing something of her heritage. Don't hate on her for it. And, she was great in Black Swan.

You could name this little baby Methuslah, that's a Hebrew name. How about Moses, his friends can call him Moe. Caiphas put Jesus to death, you can't get any more Hebrew than a high priest.

The rumor mill in Hollyweird insists that Darren Aronofsky aka the director of the Black Swan is actually this baby's father. Benny is just a shill!

Another error! This one spells the child's name TWO different ways! Do you guys have a job opening for an error checker? I could go over all the articles before you publish!

It's a great name. He is going to go to school, grow up and live a great life just like every other child. What's your point? What a rediculous post.

One suggestion for the baby's name was "Jewie-Jew Hebrewstein". Turned down because a bit too ethnic.

um Courtney isn't pretentious by a long shot and happens to mean gift from god plus I was supposed to be named Melissa which means bee. I'm entitled to my oppinion as you are to yours Natalie's acting has never appealed to me. for instance Tony Richardson's two daughters with Vanessa Redgrave were/are named Natasha [russian born on christmas day} and Joely {english God Will Be willing} and his youngest daughter is Katherine {greek Pure]

The Argentinian author Jose Luis Borges wrote a short story called "The Aleph." A man discovers that the center of the universe, the Aleph point, is locataed in his cellar. In fact, any point in the universe of time and space can be an Aleph point from which to contemplate the divine.
