About to Pop: Jason Derulo

Posted Thursday 12 November 05:00 PM By: Adam Horne

Who:
Jason Derulo
Album: 'The Whatcha Say EP'
Video: 'Whatcha Say'
Hails From: Miramar, Florida
For Fans Of: Ne-Yo, Chris Brown

Why He's About to Pop: With his debut single 'Whatcha Say' tearing up the charts, Jason Derulo's face may be new on the scene, but he's been a presence in the music world since he was twelve years old, writing songs for major artists like Diddy, Lil Wayne, Danity Kane and Sean Kingston (to name a few). Throughout those years, the multi-talented artist (he can sing, dance and act also) knew something was missing. "[Songwriting] wasn't my career path, that was not my choice. It kind of just fell in my lap and was lucrative so I went with the punches," he told PopEater during a recent office visit. "I wanted to express myself ... I didn't want to be the pen behind the voice."

This revelation was nothing new. Derulo had dreams of stardom by age five, when he started mimicking his hero, Michael Jackson. "[My mother] probably brushed it off a little bit like, 'Oh that's cute.' I would just be in front of the TV practicing every single dance move and singing all the songs for weeks at a time nonstop." Years of hard work and practice have paid off, as evident in the tracks Derulo let our staff preview during his office visit. Combining club-ready beats and clever samples with infectious melodies, Derulo is armed and ready to step out in the spotlight.

It's a Family Affair for 'Hills' Guest Stars Vedera

VederaIf you're at all a fan of MTV's faux-reality drama 'The Hills,' odds are you've heard the indie-pop stylings of Kansas City rockers Vedera. The group maintains a close relationship with the show, providing them with the type of opportunity to reach new fans that most bands would kill for.

Vedera even had the opportunity to step in front of the cameras for one episode that aired in October of 2009, an experience they talked about with our staff during a recent visit to our New York office. In the episode, Lo and Audrina attend a showcase for the band, and according to them, the two cast members were polite, jovial and great to work with. "It turned out really well!" they told us.

miley cyrusMiley Cyrus' 'L.A.-by-way-of-Nashville' jam 'Party in the U.S.A.' isn't going away anytime soon, thanks in part to a new Youtube clip that's been making waves online. The video features an endearing kid named Stephen Torrence enthusiastically rocking out in sign language to the bouncy pop tune. As evidenced by a quick browse through the Youtube comments, the cute video is making a lot of hearing-impaired tweens happy. And however you feel about the song, we can all agree that those facial expressions are priceless.

Jonas Sees in Color Enjoy Jonas Brothers Similarity

Posted Friday 04 September 03:40 PM By: Adam Horne

When North Carolina's Jonas Sees in Color chose their band name, it didn't occur to them that they had just struck Google gold. It wasn't until a certain Disney-approved trio of brothers started making headlines that they realized the potential for new fans. "When we started our band we didn't know who the Jonas Brothers were, and it's kind of to our advantage because people find us on accident," frontman Ryan Downing told PopEater during a recent office visit. "They're like, 'Cool, I dig this band too!'"

Though other pierced and tattooed rockers might be cynical about the connection, Jonas Sees in Color is anything but. The band welcomed the JoBros fans, and even acknowledged the similarities in their pop sensibilities. "We tell people, 'We're relatable but not related,'" Downing says. Though keyboardist Meagan Beth was quick to add, "One day when I marry one of them, we will be."

Livvi Franc knows she has competition. If you were to compare her to fellow Barbadian beauty Rihanna, you certainly wouldn't be the first. "You would expect that, it's pretty inevitable," Franc told our staff during a recent visit to PopEater's New York headquarters. "Every radio station, every interview."

It's been 10 years since Christian Burns made waves in the music world when his group BB Mak landed a hit single with 'Back Here.' Though his boy band days are long behind him, the hard working Brit is still making infectious pop music and exploring a new mature sound as the Bleach Works. Burns recently paid a visit to our office in New York to meet the staff and do some exploring in the Big Apple, and he documented the experience for an exclusive webisode. Have a look.

Former 'American Idol' alum Brooke White recently stopped by PopEater's New York office to meet with the staff and play some tunes from her post-'Idol' debut, 'High Hopes and Heartbreak,' which was released earlier this week. White joked about her "foghorn of a voice," as she called it, but no apologies were necessary.

The staff watched the video for her latest single 'Radio Radio' while White shied away in the corner. "I always feel weird looking at myself," she confessed.

She also opened up about the inspiration for writing the song, a feel-good summer anthem with a hint of country twang, and shared some insight into her upbringing. "We really were not TV people -- we were music people and we listened to the radio all the time," she said. "I used to have my mixtape there, I'd wait for my favorite songs and then make my mixtapes. So I had to write a song for the radio."

White showed off her guitar skills as well, strumming along while she sang a cover of the Kings of Leon tune 'Use Somebody,' which also appears on her album. "I always think it's a good idea to do a cover song," she explained.

During her visit, White also shared candid behind-the-scenes stories from her time with 'American Idol.' Although the pressures of being on the 'Idol' stage were enormous, White says it was actually the tour that followed that was the hardest part. "It was grueling, intense, but great," she admitted. "It was more the pace, keeping up with the pace. We literally did like five meet-and-greets a day."

In the end though, White has no regrets. "It was intense but I really loved that I did it. It was good."
