'Halo'

Columbia
It’s just one of many hits that Beyoncé Knowles has released (and probably will release), but “Halo” had a rippling impact, both positive and negative, since it dropped as the fourth single off her third album I Am... Sasha Fierce. The power ballad, written by Ryan Tedder (who wrote Leona Lewis’s “Bleeding Love”), Evan Bogart (who wrote Rihanna’s “SOS”) and Beyoncé, became a critical success after its January 2009 release winning Best Song at the MTV Europe Music Awards and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2010 Grammys. Following Michael Jackson’s death it also became a tribute song to the star, and Beyoncé performed it at Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The song had some shady beginnings when a rumor surfaced that Simon Cowell was angry that Beyoncé ended up recording the track, which was originally intended for Leona Lewis. But Tedder claims that he only offered it to Lewis in passing as a “just in case.” He explained, “What happened was that Beyoncé waited long enough to record that song that I had no communication with her and didn't know if she was going to do it or not.” He mentioned the track to Lewis’s camp as a backup plan, but never promised it to the singer.

But that wasn’t the only dark cloud that descended over “Halo.” Tedder wrote tracks with Kelly Clarkson for her new album All I Ever Wanted soon after working with Beyoncé, and Clarkson became furious when she heard “Halo” for the first time and realized that it sounded very similar to a song Tedder had written for her “Already Gone.” She said in an interview, “I’d never heard of a song called ‘Halo.’ Her album came out when my album was already being printed. No-one’s gonna be sittin’ at home, thinking ‘Man, Ryan Tedder gave Beyoncé and Kelly the same track to write to.’ No, they’re just gonna be saying I ripped someone off. I called Ryan and said, ‘I don’t understand. Why would you do that?’” Clarkson claims she fought to bar its release, but the record label went against her wishes.

Tedder responded to Clarkson’s allegations writing, “They are two entirely different songs conceptually, melodically, & lyrically and I would never try to dupe an artist such as Kelly Clarkson or Beyoncé into recording over the same musical track, the idea is both hurtful & absurd.” Beyoncé never responded to the controversy.

Two different music videos were released for the single, both directed by Philip Andelman. The first was a montage of Beyoncé with her boyfriend played by Michael Ealy.

The alternate, darker version had Beyoncé driving to find her boyfriend, who is being chased through the woods by police only to reach him after he’s been killed. It featured flashbacks from the original video.

"Halo" Lyrics

Remember those walls I built
Well, baby they're tumbling down
And they didn't even put up a fight
They didn't even make Remember those walls I built
Well, baby they're tumbling down
And they didn't even put up a fight
They didn't even make up a sound

I found a way to let you in
But I never really had a doubt
Standing in the light of your halo
I got my angel now

It's like I've been awakened
Every rule I had you breakin'
It's the risk that I'm takin'
I ain't never gonna shut you out
[Chorus]
Everywhere I'm looking now
I'm surrounded by your embrace
Baby I can see your halo
You know you're my saving grace
You're everything I need and more
It's written all over your face
Baby I can feel your halo
Pray it won't fade away

I can feel your halo halo halo
I can see your halo halo halo
2x

Hit me like a ray of sun
Burning through my darkest night
You're the only one that I want
Think I'm addicted to your light

I swore I'd never fall again
But this don't even feel like falling
Gravity can't forget
To pull me back to the ground again

Feels like I've been awakened
Every rule I had you breakin'
The risk that I'm takin'
I'm never gonna shut you out
(Chorus)

I can feel your halo halo halo
I can see your halo halo halo
4x
(Chorus)

I can feel your halo halo halo
I can see your halo halo halo
4x

I found a way to let you in
But I never really had a doubt
Standing in the light of your halo
I got my angel now

It's like I've been awakened
Every rule I had you breakin'
It's the risk that I'm takin'
I ain't never gonna shut you out

(Chorus)

I can feel your halo halo halo
I can see your halo halo halo
2x

Hit me like a ray of sun
Burning through my darkest night
You're the only one that I want
Think I'm addicted to your light

I swore I'd never fall again
But this don't even feel like falling
Gravity can't forget
To pull me back to the ground again

Feels like I've been awakened
Every rule I had you breakin'
The risk that I'm takin'
I'm never gonna shut you out
(Chorus)
I can feel your halo halo halo
I can see your halo halo halo
4x

(Chorus)

I can feel your halo halo halo
I can see your halo halo halo
4x
