(Aug. 21) - Controversial talk-show host Bill Maher will likely catch a lot of flack from religious diehards for his latest project, a hot-button documentary entitled "Religulous" -- but he may score an Oscar to boot.
In the film, the eponymous host of HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher," himself a devout atheist, engages everyone from casual churchgoers to social behavior experts to fire-and-brimstone zealots in a dialogue about the nature of religion and the realistic feasability that God exists.
But perhaps the most shocking thing about the film, in theaters Oct. 3, is the unanimously heavenly reviews it's receiving from critics. Variety and the Los Angeles Times are already singing the film's praises, with the Times going so far as to say that "Religulous" is almost surely guaranteed a best documentary Oscar nomination. Watch the trailer and judge for yourself.

Most Christians I talk to, claim that the other beliefs are religions, however christianity is a "reality". Says it all

Intellectual honesty and religion are not compatible in any sense of the word. Believing, word for word, fairytales and distorted and biased versions of history written by ancient men during the bronze age cannot be accepted as fact by any true thinking human with even a sophomoric sense of logic and rationalism.

...it may be that there is no God, that "the existence of all that is beautiful and in any sense good is but the accidental and ineffective byproduct of blindly swirling atoms," that we are alone in a world that cares nothing for us or for the values that we create and sustain - that we and they are here for a moment only, and gone, and that eventually there will be left no trace of us in the universe. For example does Religon really have anything to do with the God in all of us?

What if GOD is just a idea and we all have god in our head/heart but most are unable to tune into it ie we are god. What im trying to say is that maybe Religon is not really such a good thing and it takes our mind thru our ego off of who we really are. ?

If you are secure in your own beliefs and sound reason it should not matter what Bill Maher thinks or says--whether you choose to be religious or not. Some of you posting here are obviously lefty extremists--whatever for me it's just water off a duck's back. It's a waste of time to resent God or be angry with Him for things wrong in your life--perhaps the blame lies elsewhere?

MR and NEW - Sounds like you're prejudiced against the jews. And no one is trying to destroy christianity. Christianity is destroying itself. More and more people are discarding ancient superstitutions and dealing with reality. However, since the christians are always pushing their views on others and damning the realists to that mythical "lake of fire", lol, Maher has a right to voice his views. And I do believe he's talking about religion in general, not just christianity. But as usual, christians take everything to be about them. What an insecure lot.

I believe the documentary is about "Religion", not Christianity. It sums up the Christian faith that Christians believe the two are synonymous. There've probably been ten thousand religions throughout the history of human kind. Christians and I are in almost complete agreement that they're all bunk. Oh, except for the one about the white guy in a white robe and long flowing beard who created the world in six days - THAT one's real. Oh well. At any rate I loved the trailer. Can't wait to see the movie.
