(Jan. 13) - The new season of 'American Idol' begins tonight - and while we're talking about 'Idol,' it's been confirmed: last season winner David Cook and his second season contestant girlfriend Kimberly Caldwell have split up. PEOPLE reports that the breakup was amicable.

Caldwell's representative said, "Kimberly and David ended their relationship just before the holidays. The couple remain good friends and being very private people, appreciate their privacy at this time."

The relationship began with a spectacle befitting an 'Idol' power couple: Cook asked Caldwell on a date on the red carpet before the seventh season finale. The couple, both 26, have been dating since shortly after Cook was named the winner in May 2008.

Last year, Cook told PEOPLE, "I think [Kimberly] just gets that this is all nuts... she's a nice break from the chaos."

I have expected this from the beginning. She was only in it for the glory. She wanted to be in the limelight next to him. How convenient they broke up now the tour and major hype are all over. He deserves someone better and I think he realized it.
