It was five years ago when Madonna passed the proverbial torch to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during a collaborative performance of Madge's 'Like a Virgin' -- which spawned the kiss seen 'round the world at the MTV Video Music Awards. This year, on the show's 25th anniversary, Spears will return to that stage to open the event. But this time, it won't be Spears rolling around on the floor in a bridal dress talking about metaphorical chastity. No, that honor goes to Katy Perry, who will perform 'Like a Virgin' on the Sept. 7 broadcast.
That was just one of the sneak peaks revealed at the Paramount Studios lot in L.A. on Thursday, when host comedien Russell Brand and surprise guests Christina Aguilera and T.I. gathered for a preview of the show. And you know the VMAs love them some surprises.
In addition to Perry's performance, Aguilera will take the stage, unveiling what she calls "a new image, new look and new song" in her first televised performance since what Brand called, "doing a baby." As the new mother walked away in her heels, Brand quipped, "Look at that walk. That is one lucky baby. He's going to have a huge Oedipus complex."
That's not all Brand quipped on. The comedien called out the Jonas Brothers' Joe Jonas not-so-secret secret romance with Taylor Swift, after the boys asked her to introduce them at the show. "That probably came from beneath their sexy little waists," he jabbed. T.I. joined in the banter, poking fun at Brand's skin-tight pants."I thought those were aerosol painted on," the rapper joked. T.I. did have some revelations of his own as well, saying that he will be unveiling a new song with Rihanna when the two perform it together at the big event.
The VMAs air on MTV Sunday, Sept. 7, at 9pm.
