VIDEO: Top Stars Check Into General Hospital

James Franco has a long list of impressive credits on his resume, including mainstream and cult hits such as 'Spider-man' and 'Pineapple Express'. But this month he will finally receive the ultimate accolade for any true Hollywood star: a guest spot on 'General Hospital'.

Yes, it's true: the dreamy Franco, who is known for unusual career choices such as his decision to temporarily drop acting altogether to pursue a literary degree, will be appearing on the long-running soap as a mysterious assassin. But Franco is hardly the first star to pass through 'General Hospital''s hallowed halls; for decades, the show has been both a launching pad for unknowns who went on to become stars and a welcoming venue for established legends to let their hair down.

In honor of Franco's appearance, then, we thought we'd tip our hats to the folks at Port Charles and present some of our favorite star appearances on 'General Hospital'. Because you never know when that hunky doc handing out love advice may turn out to be the next Rick Springfield.

We already know that death sometimes pays off for artists. In Michael Jackson's case, death is paying off in dollars ($20 million worldwide so far), but will it pay off in pretty gold statuettes? Elizabeth Taylor might have been a tad hyperbolic when she Tweeted: "It is the single most brilliant piece of filmmaking I have ever seen. It cements forever Michael's genius in every aspect of creativity. If that weren't enough, she also said, "I truly believe this film should be nominated in every category conceivable."

Before you sniff at her assessment, consider: Google News tells us there's already 5,249 news stories for the search: "This Is It Oscar." Not only that, but Sony this week announced plans to submit the flick for several categories.

Although Michael Jackson's family is staying hush about the new documentary 'This Is It,' his long-time friend Elizabeth Taylor hasn't been able to quit talking about the film on Twitter. In a series of tweets, Taylor said, "It is the single most brilliant piece of film making I have ever seen. It cements forever Michael's genius in every aspect of creativity," she said.

"To say the man is a genius is an understatement. He cradles each note, coaxes the music to depths beyond reality. I wept from pure joy at his God given gift. There will never, ever be the likes of him again... And we have this piece of film to remind us forever and ever that once there was such a man. God kissed him," she added.

Before Madonna, before Britney, before Lindsay, before Paris, there was Liz. Elizabeth Taylor that is; Hollywood's very first "It" girl. Kicking off her career with a star turn in 'National Velvet' at the age of 12 and keeping star-watchers on the edge of their seat for nearly seven decades, Taylor created the mold that today's starlets will never break.

We may think the wild children of 2009 are trouble, but when it comes to scandal, no one did it better than Liz. If you thought the paparazzi at Khloe Kardashian's recent wedding was bad, it was nothing compared to the frantic press coverage of Taylor's first wedding to Nicky Hilton (yup Paris' granduncle). And that was only the first of her eight marriages (to seven men).

Elizabeth Taylor Prepares for Surgery

Elizabeth Taylor says she's headed to the hospital for a heart procedure. The 77-year-old actress tells her followers on Twitter that she is to undergo a "very new" procedure to improve heart function that "involves repairing my leaky valve using a clip device" rather than open-heart surgery. She said that she plans to inform her followers when the procedure is complete.

"Any prayers you happen to have lying around I would dearly appreciate," Taylor wrote Tuesday.
