John Mayer Reveals Stories Behind 'Battle Studies'

John Mayer's new album, the smart, sophisticated, and sweet 'Battle Studies,' has just been released. And no one is happier than Mayer himself. "I have no problem releasing it into the open and letting everybody have at it, poke the bear with sticks -- and that's the fun of it," he told Popeater when we went to visit him at the Burbank, Calif., studio where he was rehearsing for an upcoming tour. Mayer, of course, is used to having every aspect of his life poked with a camera these days. He spoke with Popeater about why he can't complain about that in song, how the whole music industry may one day be working for Taylor Swift and his epiphany moment with the new record.

With three successful records under his belt, John Mayer could pretty much do anything he wanted for his fourth album, 'Battle Studies.' So not only did the singer-songwriter move away from complex guitar lines in favor of a simpler sound, he decided -- on a whim -- to have Taylor Swift provide guest vocals on a song.

Mayer tells PopEater that the decision was as simple as "just my imagining hearing her voice in harmony with mine on this song that was sort of stemming up in my brain. It was a little bit like writing a screenplay with an actor in mind. I went to this place in my mind like Taylor and I were in the '70s playing on 'The Johnny Cash Show.'"

In an age when the slightest misstep or misunderstanding can cause controversy -- see Harry Connick Jr.'s recent blackface troubles -- John Mayer isn't playing it safe. In fact, his new single, 'Who Says,' boldly begins with the line "Who says I can't get stoned?"

"It's not a dirty word. It's not a curse word," Mayer tells PopEater of the first single from his upcoming album, 'Battle Studies.' "It's a presentation of an idea that makes people think a little harder about what they're listening to, which I don't think is the worst thing in the world."

John Mayer Who SaysWhen it came time to film video for 'Who Says,' John Mayer's first single off his forthcoming album 'Battle Studies,' the singer/guitarist decided to give fans a realistic glimpse into his life out of the spotlight. "It's sort of a country-ish song and I had the idea juxtapose it over something really metropolitan," Mayer tells PopEater of the NYC-filmed clip. "I want people to watch the video and feel like they hung out with me for a night, which is to say tired and exhausted," he adds, laughing.

The video, directed by Anthony Mandler, features scenes inspired by Mayer's exploits with his friends. Watch 'Who Says' after the jump!
 

TMI? LeAnn Rimes and Music's Top 10 Oversharers

Country crooner LeAnn Rimes has had tongues wagging this year over her steamy affair with her married co-star Eddie Cibrian and subsequent split from hubby Dean Shemeret. Now she is spilling her side of the story on her new album due out in the spring.

"Most of the stuff I've written [myself], so it's definitely my life," Rimes, 27, told People magazine. "Part of my therapy is to write," she says. "I write with a lot of my best friends, so most of [our meetings] are therapy sessions that turn into songs."

Longtime Nashville songwriter Patrick Davis explains, "Singers and songwriters are able to speak to their audience through their songs. I think it helps them get things off their chests." Carrie Underwood To Host Holiday Variety Show

Country superstar Carrie Underwood will be returning to Fox this December, but not to the show that made her famous. She will be hosting a holiday variety show tentatively called 'Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special,' Billboard reports.

In a throwback to the 70's, the fourth-season 'American Idol' winner will perform songs and comedy sketches with the help of celebrity guests. So far Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley and David Cook have all been signed to appear on the two-hour special.

According to Janet Charlton, Mayer's latest is 'Hills' star Kristin Cavallari. Charlton reports that the two have been "friends with benefits" for some time, but are now about to go public.
