The Top Pop Songs of the Decade - 2000s

Posted Nov 24th 2009 7:20AM By: PopEater Staff

Britney Spears ToxicWhile we can't wait to get this decade over with, one thing that will be missed is the music. The summer songs. The bangin' club hits. The unexpected cross-overs from one genre to the next. Holdovers from the '90s like Britney and Justin grew up and delivered, and we got to help create new stars like Kelly Clarkson and resurrect old ones like Kylie Minogue. It wasn't all great ('PopoZão,' anyone?), but when it came to the Top 40 set, this here was a great time to love music. Though we know you'll have serious problems with it, here now are our picks for the Top 10 Pop songs of the '00s:

10. 'Crazy,' Gnarls Barkley (2006)
Cee-Lo's haunting vocals seem to drift above the track's eerily minimalist guitar riff, and it never fails to give us chills. Creepy, sure. But it's also bouncy, catchy, and undeniably cool. In short, an amazing pop song. Oh, and the video is crazy as hell. Watch It:

About to Pop: Jay Sean

Posted Nov 23rd 2009 5:20PM By: Ashley Iasimone

Jay Sean

Who:
Jay Sean
Album: 'All or Nothing'
Video: 'Down'
Hails From: London
For Fans Of: Chris Brown, Craig David

Why He's About to Pop: Since embarking on his career in music, Jay Sean has dropped a handful of singles and two albums, and already toured extensively, performing for audiences at sold out shows worldwide. Sean's international success soon caught the attention of US record executive Ronald "Slim" Williams. Now, Sean is signed to a multi-album recording contract with Universal's Cash Money Records -- home to Lil Wayne, who collaborated with Sean on his No. 1 pop/R&B hit, 'Down' -- and is set to release his new album, 'All or Nothing.'

"Wayne is a huge inspiration, man," Sean tells PopEater. "I mean, just watching him at work and watching him on the video set and everything was super inspiring, 'cause that guy has got so much energy and is such a pro. You can just tell he's been in it for years, and he just doesn't stop grinding."

Sean has been keeping just as busy as Wayne -- 'All Or Nothing' is out on Nov. 24, and the singer is on tour in the US through December. "I'm all heart," Sean says. "I take risks and I go with my gut. Music is my passion, and I just had to give it a go. Otherwise, I don't think I'd ever be able to live with myself. Luckily, it's been working out great for me so far."

About to Pop: Justin Bieber

Posted Nov 16th 2009 5:00PM By: Ashley Iasimone

Justin Bieber

Who:
Justin Bieber
Album: 'My World'
Video: 'One Less Lonely Girl'
Hails From: Ontario, Canada
For Fans Of: Jesse McCartney, Justin Timberlake

Why He's About to Pop: When Justin Bieber visited PopEater last spring, we already had a feeling that the young singer was on the cusp of hitting it big. Although it was an early promotional appearance, Bieber impressed the staff with his confident attitude and talent, and his back story wasn't too shabby, either. The 15-year-old musician made a name for himself with homemade videos on YouTube, sparked a bidding war between Justin Timberlake and Usher -- who then landed him a record deal -- and built a growing fanbase via the Internet.

It's safe to say Bieber has since created an even greater buzz with a handful of catchy hit singles, including 'One Time,' 'One Less Lonely Girl,' 'Love Me' and 'Favorite Girl.' The singer has already presented at the VMAs, scheduled tour dates with Taylor Swift and made several TV appearances. Most recently, Bieber tells PopEater that he penned a song that he wants Diddy to record -- the two even hung out together, so that he could play it for him.

With things falling into place so quickly, Bieber has become quite the teen idol. But he seems poised to take it all in like a pro. The singer's debut album, 'My World,' is set to be released on Nov. 17, and he credits his success to his eager supporters, whom he says have made his dreams come true. "It seems like every day there is something new and exciting happening. I can't even begin to number them," Bieber tells PopEater. "Just to be able to make music and share it with the fans is pretty exciting."

Justin Timberlake StalkerJustin Timberlake was granted a restraining order on Monday against a woman who has exhibited "aggressive and harassing conduct," including one troubling occasion when she broke into his home.

About to Pop: Jaicko

Posted Nov 2nd 2009 5:45PM By: Ashley Iasimone

Who: Jaicko
Album: 'Can I'
Video: 'Oh Yeah'
Hails From: Barbados
For Fans Of: The Dream, Chris Brown

Why He's About to Pop:
Jaicko's Caribbean-infused pop tunes are just hitting US radio this year, but he's been building his fanbase for years. "
I released a number of songs in Barbados," Jaicko told PopEater. "We have two Top 40 radio stations, and I used to get plugged in between Rihanna and Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z."

The singer, who recently visited PopEater to preview some catchy tunes from his debut album, 'Can I,' might not be asked for as many autographs here in New York just yet, but that's bound to change. Jaicko's first single, 'Oh Yeah,' has already been remixed by Snoop, and for the album tracks that he didn't self-produce, a notable team of producers -- Stargate (Ne-Yo, Beyonce), Rob Allen (Chris Brown, Rihanna) and Jim Jonson (Lil Wayne) -- lent a hand.

"The reason why I decided to name the album 'Can I' was because I was doing music from nine years old. I'm 18 now," Jaicko said. "From then 'til now, I went through a lot of struggles both personally and being in the music industry. That kind of motivated me to write the track. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to it ... I think the world needs a real track like that, coming from someone young." Check out an exclusive interview with Jaicko after the jump, and keep an eye out for his album, which is set to be released this winter.

Britney's '3' and the Most Blatantly Sexual Pop Songs

Posted Oct 30th 2009 11:59PM By: PopEater Staff

Sexuality has always been Britney Spears' best weapon, and that's never been more true with the release of her video for '3' -- a song that's essentially a 4-minute manifesto on threesomes. While Miss Spears certainly can craft a steamy tune, there's a long line of sexually-charged pop hits that have made America's airwaves a little uncomfortable (and excited). Allow PopEater to break down the most sex-in-your-face pop songs:

Britney Spears: '3'

We wonder if Peter, Paul and Mary ever dreamed that their names would be used synonymously with a menage-a-trois ... or if the mention would be a # 1 hit.

Steamy Lyric:
"If you don't like the company / Let's just do it you and me / You and me / Or three / Or four ... On the floor "

Jason Trawick: Britney Spears' Not So 'Toxic' Boyfriend

Posted Oct 22nd 2009 4:32PM By: Jo Piazza

Britney Spears' mom is giving a thumbs up to her daughter's new boyfriend, agent Jason Trawick. According to US Weekly, Lynn Spears told a family friend, "He's the kind of man you would dream of your daughter marrying. The kids love him, and he's stable."

We have to say the bar for Britney's men friends has been set so low that any dude who gets out of bed to go to work in the morning seems like a winner to us. Jason has a job, his own money, hasn't been convicted of any felonies and he seems to love Britney just as she is. We take a look at why Jason is such a good catch for Brit after all the toxic beaus she has been with in the past.

Celebrity Hoaxes: All the News That Is Fit to Fake

Posted Oct 19th 2009 4:16PM By: PopEater Staff

Hoaxes prove that sometimes the best stories are the ones that are made up. And who would make a better fictional story than a celebrity? Because isn't that what celebrity is all about? Image making. Story telling. Dream inpiring.

To celebrate the hoax that is the Balloon Boy, here are some celebrity hoaxes perpetrated against us, the trusting and loyal, make that gullible, public.

"Paul is Dead"
Probably the mother of all celebrity hoaxes was the rumor that Sir Paul McCartney, lead singer of The Beatles, died. "Paul is dead" is an urban legend that Paul passed away and was replaced by a look-alike/sound-alike. Weird.

Weird Celebrity Auction Items For Sale

Posted Oct 19th 2009 3:15PM By: Amber James

When it comes to being a superfan, money is not an option -- at least for some buyers who have coughed up millions of dollars at auctions to own everything from celebrity hair to worn clothing and personal mementos. This past weekend, a clump of hair believed to have been trimmed from Elvis Presley's head when he joined the Army in 1958 sold for $15,000! So how much have people paid to own Justin Timberlake's leftover french toast or Michael Jackson's jewel-encrusted gloves? You won't believe the price tag. Find out how much money people have paid for "celebrity" items. >>

'Work Saved Me,' Madonna Says After Tough Year

Posted Oct 14th 2009 10:30AM By: PopEater Staff

Madonna knows a thing or two about gracing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. After all, she's done it 12 times. In the latest, the pop icon declares her love for "fearless and funny" Lady Gaga, lets slip that she feels "retarded" singing poppy hits like 'Into the Groove' and tries to atone for a decade of fashion, especially that "fluorescent-green sweater combo." On more serious matters, Madonna talks about the "pros and cons" of divorce and that if she hadn't pushed so hard with her work, she "may have thrown myself off a building."

Check out some choice quotes from the RS interview and a few of her best covers over the years, after the jump.

Cliffs, Pretzels and Baked Beans: Our Favorite Celebrity Death Hoaxes

Posted Oct 13th 2009 10:00PM By: Marc Schneider

If all celebrity death reports over the years turned out true (Zach Braff alive!), we'd have lost three big stars to the cliffs of New Zealand by now. Britney Spears would have met her maker thanks to a pretzel truck. And let's just say that Urkel's wake was closed casket. Hoaxes can be random, fun, disturbing. They also lift from common themes. Some of our favorites, starting with ...

Funniest Andy Samberg 'Digital Shorts'

Posted Sep 27th 2009 9:21AM By: Tom Ganjamie

If there was one thing that would be certain for the season premiere of 'Saturday Night Live,' it's that resident 'Digital Short' auteur Andy Samberg would have some sort of ridiculously funny video planned. While the Megan Fox-starring 'The Date' and 'Megan's Roommate' were kinda funny (watch 'Date' here and 'Roommate' here), we don't think they lived up to Samberg's past greatness (and really didn't need to be a 'Digital Short'). Now that his first crack at funny is out of the way this year, we figured it was time to put together the all-time most riotous 'Digital Shorts' that Andy's sick brain has ever concocted. Watch them all after the jump!

'Lazy Sunday'

This was the original 'Chronicles of Narnia'-themed Digital Short that set 'SNL' and the viral video world on fire. Lorne Michaels quickly learned that posting the videos Hulu was a way to cash in on them, rather than everyone watching on YouTube.
