John Mayer Reveals Stories Behind 'Battle Studies'

Posted Nov 18th 2009 5:00PM By: Steve Baltin

John Mayer's new album, the smart, sophisticated, and sweet 'Battle Studies,' has just been released. And no one is happier than Mayer himself. "I have no problem releasing it into the open and letting everybody have at it, poke the bear with sticks -- and that's the fun of it," he told Popeater when we went to visit him at the Burbank, Calif., studio where he was rehearsing for an upcoming tour. Mayer, of course, is used to having every aspect of his life poked with a camera these days. He spoke with Popeater about why he can't complain about that in song, how the whole music industry may one day be working for Taylor Swift and his epiphany moment with the new record.

About to Pop: Justin Bieber

Posted Nov 16th 2009 5:00PM By: Ashley Iasimone

Justin Bieber

Who:
Justin Bieber
Album: 'My World'
Video: 'One Less Lonely Girl'
Hails From: Ontario, Canada
For Fans Of: Jesse McCartney, Justin Timberlake

Why He's About to Pop: When Justin Bieber visited PopEater last spring, we already had a feeling that the young singer was on the cusp of hitting it big. Although it was an early promotional appearance, Bieber impressed the staff with his confident attitude and talent, and his back story wasn't too shabby, either. The 15-year-old musician made a name for himself with homemade videos on YouTube, sparked a bidding war between Justin Timberlake and Usher -- who then landed him a record deal -- and built a growing fanbase via the Internet.

It's safe to say Bieber has since created an even greater buzz with a handful of catchy hit singles, including 'One Time,' 'One Less Lonely Girl,' 'Love Me' and 'Favorite Girl.' The singer has already presented at the VMAs, scheduled tour dates with Taylor Swift and made several TV appearances. Most recently, Bieber tells PopEater that he penned a song that he wants Diddy to record -- the two even hung out together, so that he could play it for him.

With things falling into place so quickly, Bieber has become quite the teen idol. But he seems poised to take it all in like a pro. The singer's debut album, 'My World,' is set to be released on Nov. 17, and he credits his success to his eager supporters, whom he says have made his dreams come true. "It seems like every day there is something new and exciting happening. I can't even begin to number them," Bieber tells PopEater. "Just to be able to make music and share it with the fans is pretty exciting."

Pete Wentz Is a 'Hero,' Addresses Fall Out Boy Rumors

Posted Nov 13th 2009 4:15PM By: Melinda Newman

Pete WentzFall Out Boy may be on hiatus, but you wouldn't know it. The pop-punk group has two songs on Activision's new video game 'Band Hero' and a greatest hits set, 'Believers Never Die,' out Nov. 17. FOB co-founder Pete Wentz is a longtime gamer and he shares with PopEater his earliest gaming recollections as well as his look ahead into the band's somewhat cloudy future. Plus, he discusses playing Wii Tennis while toasted, the art to sliding across a slippery floor and debates who is more mature: your average band or a one-year-old.

How did your involvement in 'Band Hero' come about?

People call us and ask us for certain songs for certain things and usually, depending upon your relationship with your publisher, you say yes or no. We said yes. It's a great new avenue to get your songs out there, starting with 'Tony Hawk' and then it went to 'Madden' and developed into 'Guitar Hero.' It doesn't make a lot of sense to fight it to me; it makes sense to me to do it and do it on your own terms, you know.

What's doing it on your own terms mean?

You don't have your label or your management saying 'You have to do this like this or your song should sound a little bit more like this because then it will fit in on that thing,' whatever. As a band, we've never really conformed to the mainstream, but at the same time I don't think there's anything dirty about the word "pop." It's not a dirty word to me.

What video game did you first fall in love with growing up?

My first was probably 'Super Mario Bros,' and then I quickly moved on through all the Nintendo games from 'Top Gun' to 'The Goonies II' to 'Contra' and moved into Super Nintendo. I was into Sega Genesis and 'Sonic the Hedgehog' and then I left. I kind of got into girls for a little bit ... Then we did the Nintendo Fusion tour and Nintendo sent us these Wiis and we didn't know anything about what they were, but I just fell in love with it. I threw my back out playing tennis.

John Mayer Calls Working With Taylor Swift a 'Wild Experience'

Posted Nov 12th 2009 3:37PM By: Dan Reilly

With three successful records under his belt, John Mayer could pretty much do anything he wanted for his fourth album, 'Battle Studies.' So not only did the singer-songwriter move away from complex guitar lines in favor of a simpler sound, he decided -- on a whim -- to have Taylor Swift provide guest vocals on a song.

Mayer tells PopEater that the decision was as simple as "just my imagining hearing her voice in harmony with mine on this song that was sort of stemming up in my brain. It was a little bit like writing a screenplay with an actor in mind. I went to this place in my mind like Taylor and I were in the '70s playing on 'The Johnny Cash Show.'"

Brad Paisley Gets Kanye'd During CMAs

Posted Nov 12th 2009 6:32AM By: PopEater Staff

Taylor Swift had a night to remember at the 43rd Annual CMA Awards, sweeping all the major honors she was up for (full coverage at The Boot). But even as the awards keep racking up for the young star, she can't seem to escape the moment in September when Kanye West interrupted her.

On two occasions at the CMAs (one intentional, the other not so much) her fellow Nashvillians had a bit of fun with the oft-parodied episode, with co-host Brad Paisley getting the joke on him. First, Grand Ole Opry star Little Jimmy Dickens interrupted Carrie Underwood when she was praising Paisley's song 'Welcome to the Future.' Watch:

Taylor Swift Mocks Kate Gosselin, Kanye and Joe Jonas on 'SNL'

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift, host of this week's 'Saturday Night Live,' didn't spend much time addressing Kanye West's stage storming incident. She made brief mention in an opening song that included all the topics she doesn't want to talk about: her break-up with Joe Jonas and "that werewolf from 'Twilight'", Taylor Lautner. Later in the evening she even spoofed Kate Gosselin. Watch the videos after the jump. >>
