Skinny celebrities are nothing new over the last decade or two. Calista Flockhart drawing criticism, then Ellen Pompeo was the next TV target. Now, the young actresses of '90210' (Shenae Grimes, Jessica Stroup and AnnaLynne McCord) are taking heat from blogs, publications ... and even 'Gossip Girl' actor Penn Badgley for their bony physiques and the young teens who see them each week.
Badgley chatted with PopEater exclusively at a Carlo Rossi party, telling us he's heard the swirl about the show's skinny starlets and that he's "never been proponent of the thin L.A. girls." He goes on to tell us that he thinks it's "healthy" that the females on 'Gossip Girl' "aren't bone-thin." He also has solid advice for the '90210' gals: "I hope they eat a double cheeseburger or something."

As young actresses and teens become more influential on pop culture, the hippest of the young female celeb crowd are growing in stature, but seem to be shrinking in figure. The new '90210' starlets are just the latest.

Us Weekly jumped on the controversy, even claiming that costars of the '90210' actresses are planning an intervention in order to help them.

Shenae Grimes (left) and Jessica Stroup (right) have revived the '90210' series, but EW is wondering whether their bone-showing physiques are setting a bad example for their teen fanbase. "The CW's spin-off are alarmingly thin, with arms that seem thickest at the wrists, and legs that look, well, like arms," an EW column says.

Grimes, who appears to be the show's breakout star, has no problem showing off the body that many consider too gaunt. She recently blogged about the controversy, saying "I'm sorry if you don't like it, but this is who I am."

Stroup often appears to be even tinier than Grimes. "They're trying to pull in the 'Gossip Girl' audience and that's the image: hyper-skinny models."

    Getty Images

AnnaLynne McCord, formerly of 'Nip/Tuck' fame and now a '90210' vixen, has denied via her publicist that she got a call from the network about her weight. Her publicist says McCord eats "whatever she wants."

One EW source says that '90210' is "trying to pull in the 'Gossip Girl' audience and that's the image: hyper-skinny models." 'Gossip' starlet Taylor Momsen is often lumped into weight conversations.

Kate Bosworth's weight often makes headlines, as the 'Blue Crush' starlet has dropped a considerable amount of poundage since breaking onto the scene.

    Getty Images

When it comes to A-list Hollywood, Keira Knightley's name is always at the top of the "she's too skinny" list. She's often had to publicly deny anorexia and other assertions related to her weight.

Perhaps the pioneer of puny, people discussed Calista Flockhart's weight more than her innovative show, 'Ally McBeal' when it was in its prime.

EW.com's Pop Watch blog reports on the growing controversy surrounding '90210' starlets Shenae Grimes, Jessica Stroup and AnnaLynne McCord. The tiny trio have reportedly gotten concerned phone calls from the network about their weight, and drawn the ire of many Hollywood insiders.
"Everyone says television adds five or ten pounds, so if you're watching and someone looks like they haven't eaten in forever, what must they look like in person?" a Hollywood insider asked to PopWatch. Going even further, the source questions whether show heads should get involved. "Why doesn't someone on set or a producer or a studio head say, 'This is not okay'?"
A '90210' source reportedly did call each of the starlets to express concern over their weight. McCord's rep denies such a call was made, and stresses that she eats "whatever she wants."
Us Weekly dedicated their cover this week to the controversy, claiming that show staffers and fellow actors are planning an intervention for the girls. "They are trying too hard to be skinny, and it's started to wear on them. It's just not healthy," a show source tells Us.

The new show's actresses only continue a trend that's been spiraling in Hollywood. In recent years, stars like Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth and Keira Knightley have all undergone drastic weight fluctuations. Knightley often has to dodge or answer questions about whether she's anorexic.
The real concern lies in the fact that The CW champions the fact that '90210' is the winner in the female 12-34 demographic on Tuesday nights, giving its growing fanbase of young, impressionable viewers less and less actress to look at.

When you can see someone's ribcage bone by bone, that is too thin. The bobble-head look is not attractive!

Men do not like women this skinny! Its all the homosexual stylists in hollywood that go gaga over skinny, and its ruining the health and image of women in America. There was no reason to hire such skinny girls for this show. There are thousands of other actors in Hollywood waiting for a shot.

LAFabFaces- First of all very rarely are females built that skinny. Males it is much more common because their metabolisms are usually faster... but I know I have seen at least one of these girls when she was on another show and she was not THIS skinny. This is unhealthy!!!!

My son is 17, 5 ft 10 inches tall and weighs 112 lbs. He has tried and CANNOT gain weight . Believe me, he would LOVE to. Some ppl are just made that way. He played sports up to last year and did get up into the 120's while lifting weights. As far as just putting on lbs naturally, not happening for him.

I am 18 and naturally tiny, i am roughly 5'4 give or take maybe 5'3, but i do EAT ALOT!!!!!! My body just doesn't put any pounds on, It took me 4 years to go from 45lbs to 75lbs, and now im stuck at 102lbs. Sometimes peoples bodies are just really skinny and they can't help that trust me i've been accoused of taking pills, or purging, but its not true. This girls are too thin, and i feel sorry for anyone who wants to look like them

Society expects women to be thin. It expects men to be whatever size they would like to be. Studios get on the starlet's backs when they are normally weighted, and ask them to lose weight. Then they are surprised when they show up looking like skeletons.

In the olden days, "normal weight" was 100 pounds for a female 5 feet tall. Add 5 pounds for each inch over 5 feet, subtract 5 for each inch under. What the problem here is is THE CAMERA. People who look perfectly wonderful IN PERSON feel abnormal seeing themselves ON FILM. They then become prey to eating disorders. Frankly, I don't know how you stop this, unless film is invented that does not appear to add weight. This current generation is OBSESSED with filming each other, even on cellphones, and constantly isolating body parts,....................All too much, you have 5 year-olds worrying about pageants and weight........REAL values seem to just be gone.or is that just among AOL people??

Well for one McCord looks okay but I'll agree Imy one she's 4'11 and she weighs about 95pds, these girls have no business being this skinny, they are taller than me but should weight a little bit more than they should. I ts sad when you can see bones on them. Konajimjim thats because parents don't care anymore about their kids these days they'd let them sit and rot in front of a tv without schooling if they could and it save them money. Some parents it not like that. Something might be depressing the kid in the same incident and makes them want to eat and eat. Most kids want to look like those idols and idollze them for something they want to be and will try any means to get there. But I didn't watch 90210 then and I am not watching it now. Wouldn't even watch it some one was paying me. I rather watch csi/ncis than that bull crap.
